batbrobeyond asked: As my go-to authority on all things Shazam, I wanted to hear your take on this recent name-change announcement regarding the Captain.

I think the reasons Johns gave in the announcement are a little silly, but I understand why they’re doing it. I’m not crazy about it, but I get it, and frankly I’m surprised they hadn’t already tried it. “Captain Marvel” has enjoyed a little popularity in other media recently so I think it’s the strangest time to decide to change the name. It raises a lot of other questions (What’s the Wizard’s name now? Will “Shazam!” still be the magic word? Will there still be a magic word? What would Mary and Freddy be called?) but what I think a lot of folks seem to be forgetting is that none of those things are safe. It’s a relaunch, for all purposes this is a new character.

I think that’s my bottom line, this is a different character. I’ll certainly keep an open mind until I read it, but I don’t feel like I have to like the character, because I’ve still got plenty of stories with the character I enjoy. I guess that’s my take on the whole relaunch; because they’re not messing with the Superman (for example) I enjoyed as a kid -this Superman is a new character as far as I’m concerned- I don’t feel like I owe him anything. It’s really pretty freeing.
